Xavi Hernandeztechnician at Barcelonasaid that the club has a bright future, with or without him at the helm, after the 4-2 defeat in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey, to Athletic Bilbaolast Wednesday (24).
In the press conference after the elimination, the Spaniard spoke about Barcelona’s short squad, but highlighted the strength of the young people and projected a great future for the “culés”.
“We are playing with children. The cast is small. That’s what I mean when I say we’re under construction. I think this is the start of something big. Whether I’m here or not, Barça has a great future.”
“There is a very good project, not in terms of me as a coach, but in terms of a very good generation that is emerging. Cubarsí, Fort, Lamine, Guiu and many more players… Fermín López”.
“I think it’s the start of something big, but we have to work hard and win. It’s a question of winning at Barça.”
The defeat at San Mamés came just ten days after Barcelona were beaten 4-1 by Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.
However, despite being disappointed with the result, Xavi was proud of the performance of the team’s youngsters, such as teenagers Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, Hector Fort and Marc Guiu in the elimination.
“All coaches at big clubs depend on trophies, but I feel proud of the way we competed against a big team until the end, especially the young ones,” said Xavi.
