- Laura Jardim: Bolsonaro gives up going to today’s Bolsonaro demonstration in Paulista
- Bernardo M. Franco: Bolsonaro lost, but democracy remains under threat, researchers say
The former president, who even published the call on his social media profiles, decided not to go to the event, as columnist Lauro Jardim reported. Bolsonaro made a video last week, and even told Malafaia that he would go, but he left Rio de Janeiro this Sunday morning and went directly to Brasília.
Demonstration brings together Bolsonaro supporters in São Paulo
Before 2pm, protesters dressed in green and yellow t-shirts and Brazilian and Israeli flags were already gathering in front of Masp, on Avenida Paulista. The event officially began at 2:40 pm, with a minute of silence in memory of Cleriston, a man who was arrested after participating in the acts of vandalism and invasion in Praça dos Três Poderes on January 8 and died in the Papuda Penitentiary.
In the only electric trio of the demonstration, a banner was displayed with the phrase: “In defense of the democratic rule of law, Human Rights and in memory of Cleriston Pereira da Cunha”. Under shouts of “Fora Xandão” and “Lula, thief, you belong in prison” and with Brazilian and Israeli flags, protesters and parliamentarians attacked the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and President Lula.

The federal deputy Marcel Van Hattem (New – RS) criticized the “abuses” of the Court.
— Enough with so much abuse. This week I was together with colleagues and many other Brazilians at the wake of our dear Clezão. He suffered this unfair torture for months and became not just my friend, but a friend of Brazil. You are here honoring Clezão’s life — he spoke — There are people who are being tortured by a Court that considers itself above the Constitution. We always act within the law and the Constitution. The time for the STF ministers will come and it is coming.
The federal deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) asked for “justice” and directed his speech to Cleriston’s family members who were on stage.
— He will not be forgotten, he will continue to live in the hearts of each one of us who are sure that this country will have justice.

One of the Bolsonarist politicians present at the event was federal deputy Ricardo Salles (PL-SP), who took advantage of his speech to attack the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB). Salles gave a speech questioning Nunes as a representative of right-wing thought.
— There are many who try to usurp the legitimacy and strength of the right. Here, in our city of São Paulo, we have one who is sitting there by chance, he is only there because the mayor unfortunately died, and he wants to pretend to be right-wing. But we know he isn’t,” he said.
Salles faces a struggle within his own party to try to run for mayor of the capital of São Paulo, as the party’s leadership wants to support the emedebista.
Without the Bolsonaro clan at the event, the position of most acclaimed figures was occupied by federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG), who arrived at the event around 3pm. Many people asked to take a photo with the country’s most voted parliamentarian in 2022 as he tried to reach the trio, but were held back by his security guards.
In his speech, Nikolas stirred up the crowd against Moraes.
— They took away people’s freedom unjustly and took a person’s life. It could have been your father, your brother, a relative of yours, and how would you be? What would be your reaction to what is happening? I believe this is the beginning of something. We are the majority, more than 58 million people. I have no doubt that ten, 20 years from now, what we are doing here today will echo throughout eternity. If there is anyone here in Paulista who wants to see the Alexandre de Moraes out of your chair, give a shout – asked the deputy from Minas Gerais, which was responded with shouts and fervent applause – Alexandre de Moraes, Brazil is not afraid of you.
Other parliamentarians present were federal deputies Paulo Bilynskyj (PL-SP), Gustavo Gayer (PL-GO), Sóstenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ), senator Magno Malta (PL-ES) and state deputies from São Paulo Major Mecca (PL) , Paulo Mansur (PL) and Tomé Abduch (Republicans).
Protestant pastor Silas Malafaia used his space on the sound truck to attack the press and the STF, in addition to defending the people who were at the events on January 8th in Praça dos Três Poderes.
— The most that the ‘dictator in toga’ Alexandre de Moraes had to do, for those who broke it, was to send it to the first instance. What morals does this guy have to be a STF minister? The president (of the Supreme Court), Barroso, said ‘we defeated Bolsonarism’. These guys have no moral standing to be STF ministers — he said. — If these guys escape the supreme power, which is the people, they will not escape divine justice, I declare in the name of Jesus. We do not have a Federal Supreme Court, we have a supreme political court.
