Supporters of Vitesse waited for the players bus on Saturday evening after the 5-1 defeat at Go Ahead Eagles. Trainer Phillip Cocu understands the frustrations of the supporters.
According to the Gelderlander About thirty supporters were present at Papendal to express their dissatisfaction. Cocu, captain Marco van Ginkel and goalkeeper Eloy Room addressed the supporters. The conversations between the selection and the fans took place in a calm atmosphere.
Cocu acknowledged to the supporters that Vitesse is having a tough season. “And then this match is a huge blow. But we are doing everything we can to improve performance.”
The trainer was annoyed by the attitude of his players during the match with Go Ahead. “As a team we have let it go too much,” Cocu said ESPN. “Bad defense, not good transition. There was actually no belief. That really annoys me.”
“As a team you should never attack each other, even if you are 3-1 behind,” said the coach. “Then you make sure it stays 3-1 and maybe you make it 3-2. If they had been more effective, it would have been an even bigger result. This is simply not possible. I am very angry and frustrated about that.”
Vitesse is sixteenth in the Eredivisie after eleven games. That place means play-offs for promotion/relegation at the end of the season. The Arnhem team has so far only achieved competition victories over FC Volendam (1-2) and NEC (1-3).
