Home favorite Michael van Gerwen won the Dutch Darts Masters in Den Bosch on Saturday. The three-time world champion defeated top talent Luke Littler in a thrilling final 8-6.
For Van Gerwen it is his first tournament victory of this year. Last week he missed out on the overall victory at the Bahrain Darts Masters due to an 8-5 defeat against Littler in the final.
Van Gerwen found it difficult to keep up with Littler in scoring in the first legs, but still managed to get to 3-4. After that, Van Gerwen started playing better and moved more and more towards Littler.
Van Gerwen made the difference from 6-6 and won two legs in a row. For example, he won the Toon Greebe Trophy, named after darts player Toon Greebe, who died last year.
Both finalists achieved an average of over one hundred per three arrows. Van Gerwen achieved an average of 100.59, while Littler finished with a whopping 106.71.
Van Gerwen got away well against ‘Barney’
Van Gerwen reached the final by beating Gian van Veen 7-4 in the semi-finals. In the quarter-finals, Van Gerwen was too strong for Raymond van Barneveld (6-5), even though he conceded two match darts.
Littler made a big impression during the tournament in Den Bosch, by beating Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price, among others.
The Dutch Darts Masters in Den Bosch was the second tournament of the World Series of Darts. A total of eight tournaments will be completed. The final is in September in AFAS Live in Amsterdam.
