Under pressure, Xavi announces that he will leave Barcelona at the end of the season

Xavi Hernandez will leave technical command of the Barcelona at the end of the season. The decision was announced by the coach himself this Saturday (27), shortly after the 5-3 defeat to Villarreal, at home, in the 22nd round of LALIGA.

Former player and idol blaugrana is under pressure in his position because of the sequence of negative results, especially after his vice-president Spanish Super Cupwhen he lost to his rival Real Madridand the early fall in the quarterfinals King’s Cup for the Athletic Bilbao.

“It is a situation that requires common sense and I have decided that on June 30th I will not continue as Barça coach,” he said at a press conference.

”Thinking about the players, they will free themselves, we played with a lot of tension and we think as culé (Barça fan) and man, the best thing for the club is to leave. I will do my best in these remaining months, we can still have a good season. This is the message I would like to convey, with the peace of mind of making this decision with common sense, thinking more about the club than about myself,” he added.

Therefore, the 44-year-old Spaniard will not fulfill his contract until the end, as his current contract would run until the middle of 2025.

At Barça since November 2021, Xavi had faced harsh criticism in his second season in charge of Barcelona due to the team’s irregular performance. He had even left his future open after being eliminated in the Copa del Rey.

“We are playing with children. The cast is small. That’s what I mean when I say we’re under construction. I think this is the start of something big. Whether I’m here or not, Barça has a great future.”

“There is a very good project, not in terms of me as a coach, but in terms of a very good generation that is emerging. Cubarsí, Fort, Lamine, Guiu and many more players… Fermín López,” he said.

After winning the LALIGA title in 2022/23, Barça is far from competing for the top of the table, occupying 3rd position, with 44 points, 10 less than leader Real Madrid and eight behind runner-up Girona.

According to the Spanish press, the Italian-Brazilian Thiago Mottacurrently in Bologna, is President Juan Laporta’s favorite to assume the position.
