Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United lost at home to Manchester City in the Manchester derby on Sunday: 0-3. Liverpool won 3-0 at home against Nottingham Forest and continues to participate fully in the Premier League top.
Already in the opening phase it became clear that Manchester United was facing a difficult match in the derby with their fellow city rivals. It was City that took the lead when visiting their arch-rival. André Onana made two good saves to prevent the reigning national champion from taking the lead in the lion’s den within seven minutes.
Not much later the opening goal was in the net. Haaland was allowed to score from the penalty spot after 26 minutes after a foul by Rasmus Højlund on Rodri. The Norwegian remained icy calm and sent Onana into the wrong corner: 1-0. United offered very little in return. We had to wait for the second City goal, which came shortly after halftime.
Erling Haaland was completely overlooked by the Manchester United defense at the far post and was able to head in with complete freedom: 0-2. In the 69th minute, United had a serious chance through Marcus Rashford, but the striker shot wide.
At 0-3 in the eightieth minute, the United defense was dismantled again by manager Josep Guardiola’s team. Haaland offered Phil Foden an opportunity not to be missed: 0-3. Moments later, the Englishman was very close to scoring a majestic goal. His bicycle kick – it was reminiscent of Wayne Rooney’s legendary goal in the Manchester derby in 2011 – narrowly missed the post.
This spared Ten Hag’s formation from worse. In the final phase, substitute Antony escaped a red card after a kicking movement towards Jérémy Doku. Due to their fifth defeat in ten league matches, United is eighth. City is number three in England.
Liverpool has a carefree afternoon against Nottingham
Diogo Jota scored the opening goal after half an hour and Darwin Núñez doubled the score against Nottingham Forest shortly afterwards. Jota’s goal was followed by a statement of support for Luis Díaz. Earlier in the day it was announced that the Liverpool striker’s parents had been kidnapped in Colombia. His mother is now safe.
With Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch in the starting line-up and Cody Gakpo coming on as a substitute early in the second half, Liverpool made it 3-0 in the closing stages. Mohamed Salah was the goalscorer for manager Jürgen Klopp’s team.
Liverpool remains in the wake of Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal and feels the hot breath of Aston Villa, which also won. Manager Unai Emery’s in-form team continued their midweek victory over AZ (1-4) with a 3-1 victory over Luton Town.
Villa made it 3-0 through John McGinn, Moussa Diaby and an own goal from Tom Lockyer. In the final minutes Luton saved the honor from substitute Tahith Chong. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez scored an own goal.
Brighton does not follow up on victory over Ajax
Furthermore, three days after the 2-0 win over Ajax, Brighton & Hove Albion did not achieve a victory on their own field. With Joël Veltman as a substitute and Bart Verbruggen and Jan Paul van Hecke on the bench for ninety minutes, the score was 1-1 against Fulham.
Earlier in the day, West Ham United-Everton ended 0-1. Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal of the match on a pass from Jack Harrison.
