Vitesse suffered its fifth defeat in a row in the Eredivisie on Saturday when it visited Fortuna Sittard: 3-1. Joshua Kitolano shot Sparta Rotterdam to a 0-1 win over Heracles Almelo.
Kaj Sierhuis had a leading role at Fortuna Sittard-Vitesse. The home team’s striker scored twice and could have even scored a hat-trick, but he missed a penalty in the 75th minute. Mark Diemers (in 2019 against VVV-Venlo) therefore remains the only player this century to score three times in an Eredivisie match for Fortuna.
What was special was that Sierhuis was even allowed to take the penalty twice and failed to get the ball in both times. Vitesse keeper Eloy Room came off his line too early when stopping the first penalty. On the second attempt, Sierhuis was again unable to get the ball past Room.
The 3-1 final score was already on the scoreboard at that time and so the misses did not bother Fortuna. In the meantime, Vitesse played with ten men from the 49th minute onwards, after two yellow cards and therefore a red card for Melle Meulensteen.
Interim coach Edward Sturing was on the bench at Vitesse for the second time this season on Saturday, but the results under the club icon have so far been no better than under Phillip Cocu, who has resigned. Within a minute, Sierhuis made it 1-0 on a pass from Ivo Pinto. In the 23rd minute, the Portuguese back was also responsible for Sierhuis’s 2-0. Shortly after halftime, Tijjani Noslin made it 3-0.
With ten against eleven, Million Manhoef made the score slightly more bearable for Vitesse (3-1). The assist for the Jong Oranje attacker’s goal came from Marco van Ginkel, who was posted in the striker role by Sturing. It could not prevent Vitesse from losing again and remaining bottom in the Eredivisie.
Sparta only needs one goal against Heracles
Heracles Almelo was unable to follow up last week’s 0-5 win against Almere City FC at home. The team of coach John Lammers suffered its seventh defeat of the season against Sparta: 0-1.
The only goal of the mediocre match in Erve Asito came from Kitolano. The Sparta midfielder controlled the ball into the right corner after an hour, after an assist from left back Djevencio van der Kust.
Sparta continues to perform excellently in the Eredivisie. The Rotterdam team has 21 points after 14 matches and is well in the left row.
