State deputy for 36 years, Campos Machado dies in São Paulo

State deputy in São Paulo for 36 years, Antônio Carlos Campos Machado passed away early this Saturday morning (6) in the capital of São Paulo at the age of 84. In a statement, the family of Campos Machado, as he was better known, reported that the parliamentarian “fought bravely in recent days against a serious case of leukemia.”

Criminal lawyer graduated from the University of São Paulo (USP), he was one of São Paulo’s longest-serving deputies, elected for consecutive terms between 1987 and 2023. “During this period, he worked on more than 4 thousand legislative initiatives, with almost 300 laws approved, some of them with national repercussion, such as free state public transport for people over 60 years old, religious freedom law and law on access to beaches for people with disabilities, among others”, highlights the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo (Alesp), via note.

“His extraordinary personal trajectory, in law and politics, which marked generations, will not be forgotten, on the contrary, it will serve, from now on, as a beacon for all who dream of a more just and fraternal society”, wrote the family, in note.

Recently, Campos Machado joined the PSD. Previously, he was state president of Avante and, for decades, the main leader of the PTB in São Paulo.

In a statement, the vice-president of the Republic and former governor of São Paulo, Geraldo Alckmin, lamented the parliamentarian’s death. “Today I lost a great friend, whose hallmark was loyalty. One of the greatest party leaders in the country, an admirable political organizer, a dedicated servant of the public cause, Campos Machado was faithful to the commitments he assumed, always guided by the ideals of defending democracy and respect for institutions and legitimately constituted powers. He was elected deputy to the Legislative Assembly of our state eight times, where he stood out in parliamentary work, whose main purpose was social promotion, the defense of the family, the valorization of women and human dignity. May the loyalty for which he will always be remembered be his greatest legacy to inspire us”, he wrote on his social networks.

Alesp informed that the wake will be held in its Monumental Hall, at Palácio 9 de Julho, from 1:30 pm today. The burial will be at Parque Morumby Cemetery, after the end of the wake, at 10am this Sunday (7).
