Girona created a new sensation in La Liga on Sunday. The team of Daley Blind, among others, won the top match against FC Barcelona 2-4 and can call themselves leaders again.
Girona’s win was not undeserved. The visitors took the lead in the opening phase through Arten Dovbyk after a well-played attack. Not much later, Robert Lewandowski scored the equalizer with his head. Even before half time it became 1-2 thanks to a punt from Miguel Gutiérrez.
In the final phase of the match, Valery Fernández made the decision: 1-3. Ilkay Gündogan’s tying goal came in injury time. Lewandowski then missed a huge chance to equalize, after which Cristhian Stuani determined the final score.
Frenkie de Jong completed the entire match for Barcelona. The same applied to Girona for his fellow countryman and former Ajax teammate Blind, who received a yellow card.
With 41 points from sixteen games, Girona, which beat Barcelona for the first time, leads the La Liga table. The lead over number two Real Madrid is two points. Earlier this season, the very surprising Girona also took the lead.
Coach Xavi’s Barcelona, which had beaten number three Atlético Madrid last week, had to take a step back and conceded seven points to Girona.
Atlético wins for the tenth time in twelve matches
Atlético won 2-1 against bottom-of-the-table Almería earlier in the day. Halfway through it was already 2-0 in the Wanda Metropolitano stadium thanks to goals from Álvaro Morata and Ángel Correa. In the 62nd minute, Léo Baptistão returned the favor on behalf of the visitors.
That was right before Memphis took the field. The 29-year-old attacker of the Dutch national team is back after being sidelined for a while with a muscle injury. He also came on as a substitute in the previous two matches for Atlético, which won ten of the last twelve matches.
Granada-Athletic Club was suspended on Sunday after the death of a Granada fan in the stands. The match came to a halt after more than fifteen minutes. When it turned out that the supporter had died, it was decided not to continue playing. Athletic Club led 0-1 thanks to a goal by Iñaki Williams.
