FC Groningen lost the away match against SC Cambuur 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The halftime score in Leeuwarden was 1-0. Luciano Valente scored for head coach Dick Lukkien’s team. The Pride of the North now has 12 competition matches in the Kitchen Champion Division with 14 points.
FC Groningen played in Leeuwarden with the same starting line-up as last Monday against FC Emmen. The home team took the lead within ten minutes. Marco Tol worked a free kick behind Hidde Jurjus. FC Groningen only became dangerous before half-time with attempts from distance, such as captain Leandro Bacuna’s shot after half an hour of play. Both teams failed to create any clear-cut opportunities in the first half.
Second half
With a triple substitution, Lukkien tried to change the offensive course after the break. Initially, it was again shot attempts that had to lead to danger, substitute Laros Duarte twice and Johan Hove. The fourth attempt was successful. Another substitute, Luciano Valente, scored in the far corner ten minutes after the break: 1-1. His first goal for FC Groningen in professional football.
FC Groningen then failed to press on and the match became more and more in balance. Just under ten minutes before the end, a dead set piece was once again fatal for FC. Remco Balk appeared after a corner kick and scored, 2-1.
Immediately afterwards, another substitute, Kevin van Veen, had a great opportunity. The striker drove the ball over hard from close range. Just before the end, FC Groningen’s fifth substitute, Thom van Bergen, was close to the equalizer, but the young striker aimed just over.

Next Wednesday, FC Groningen will play against Rijnsburgse Boys in the KNVB Cup tournament. The match with the Second Divisionist starts at 8 p.m.

Next Sunday, FC Groningen will play at home against FC Dordrecht in competition match number 13 of the KKD. The kick-off in Euroborg is at 2:30 PM.
