Real Madrid qualified for the round of 16 in the Champions League thanks to a 3-0 win over SC Braga on Wednesday. Inter also secured wintering, while Benfica was eliminated.
SC Braga surprisingly had the first big opportunity to take the lead when they visited Real Madrid. After six minutes, Alvaro Djalo was allowed to score from 11 meters, but keeper Andriy Lunin prevented a goal.
Real Madrid dominated and took the deserved lead after half an hour. Rodrygo cleverly put back from the back line, after which Brahim Díaz shot in hard. After the break, ‘De Koninklijke’ determined the final score within a few minutes through goals from Vinícius Júnior (58′) and Rodrygo (61′).
In the same group, Napoli and Union Berlin drew 1-1. After an earlier disallowed goal, the Italian champions deservedly took the lead in the 39th minute through Matteo Politano, who mercilessly struck. It was Napoli’s hundredth goal in the Champions League.
In the 52nd minute, Union Berlin leveled with a goal from David Datro Fofana. He tapped in the rebound from the shot of the Surinamese-Dutch Sheraldo Becker. It remained the same, which means it will remain exciting in group C for a while.
Inter placed, Benfica ready
Internazionale, like Real Madrid, qualified for the eighth finals with a 0-1 victory at Red Bull Salzburg. There was a long back-and-forth in Salzburg, where Serdar Gözübüyük was in charge.
Despite chances for both teams, the match seemed to end in a goalless draw. In the 86th minute there was the goal at Inter. Lautaro Martínez used a penalty to secure a ticket for the round of 16.
Benfica lost 3-1 at Real Sociedad. After twenty minutes it was already 3-0 due to a weak Benfica defense thanks to goals from Mikel Merino, Mikel Oyarzabal and Ander Barrenetxea.
It could even have been 5-0 for the Basque club at halftime, but a goal was disallowed and the post prevented Brais Mendez from using his penalty. The team of former PSV coach Roger Schmidt came out of the dressing room fresh despite the significant deficit: Rafa Silva made it 1-3 in the 49th minute with a nice shot into the bottom left corner.
The Portuguese national champions were unable to make up the deficit and thus suffered their fourth defeat in the Champions League. Real Sociedad has also qualified for the knockout phase thanks to Inter’s victory.
