Almere City started the game boldly and put pressure on the home team in the first minutes. PSV struggled for a while, but not much later they took control and had the first chance of the match. Hirving Lozano was sent off by captain De Jong, but Almere keeper Nordin Bakker was well in the way.

Bakker did that again not much later when Johan Bakayoko scored the 1-0. The Belgian processed a splitting pass from Olivier Boscagli very well, only getting ahead of Bakker, but the goalie blocked Bakayoko’s effort with an outstretched leg.

Great chance Almere

Despite PSV’s dominance, the Eindhoven team’s play was anything but flashy. The untouchability that the team has displayed since the start of the season was not reflected against Almere, just like in the matches against FC Utrecht and Feyenoord.

After just over half an hour of play, Almere almost took advantage of this. After a quick breakout, Yoann Cathline got the ball at his feet and laid the attacker off to Stije Resink. The midfielder was able to shoot freely just outside the box, but he shot high over.

The spell was broken just before half time. As is often the case, De Jong lifted his PSV over the dead center and, as so often, Sergiño Dest was involved in the attack. The back swung the ball forward, after which De Jong finally managed to outwit the strong goalkeeper Bakker with a simple volley for the 1-0.

Just after Almere had become dangerous again through Cathline – the attacker mowed over the ball when he was able to take a swing – PSV struck again.

The home team did this partly thanks to Noa Lang. The attacker had a starting position for the first time since the hamstring injury he suffered in October. Lang was unable to leave his mark on the match, but was involved in the 2-0. His pass to Lozano put the Mexican in a promising position. Lozano opted for the cross, but the ball ended up on the arm of the incoming Loïc Mbe Soh.

The awarded penalty was simply scored by De Jong, his seventeenth Premier League goal of the season. Not much later, Lang left the field with cramps.

The 2-0 lead turned out to be enough for PSV, because the opponent’s strength was draining away and the leader himself had had enough. The home team came out dangerous a few times, but no more goals were scored.
