FC Groningen reached the quarter-finals of the TOTO KNVB Cup tournament at the expense of Excelsior on Tuesday. The first division team won in Kralingen thanks to two goals from Romano Postema.
Postema scored his goals in a period of six minutes. In the 72nd minute he scored the opening goal after a through ball from Thom van Bergen. Six minutes later he finished coolly again, this time after a through ball from Luciano Valente.
These were the 21-year-old Postema’s seventh and eighth goals in nine games in the KNVB Cup. No player has scored more times in the cup tournament since the FC Groningen youngster made his debut. Only Danilo and Dusan Tadic have scored eight goals since then.
The 0-2 victory was somewhat against the grain of the game. Excelsior dominated much of the match, but the Eredivisie player hardly created any big chances. FC Groningen’s chances could also be counted on one hand.
For FC Groningen it is the first time since the 2014/2015 season that the club has reached the quarter-finals. Then the ‘Pride of the North’ won the cup tournament for the first time in club history. PEC Zwolle was settled in the final at the time.
