Mourinho is no longer Roma coach after club announcement

The Portuguese Jose Mourinho is no longer the coach of Roma. The Italian club, which occupies ninth place in the A leagueannounced this Tuesday morning (16) the change in his technical command.

On its official website, the Italian team surprised and announced that former midfielder Daniele De Rossi, an idol of the team during his playing days, will take over as coach for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.

Mourinho took over at Roma in May 2021 and has since been UEFA champion Conference League in his first season and reached the UEFA final Europa League last year. In the current season, however, the 60-year-old coach has accumulated 13 wins, 6 draws and 8 defeats in 27 games played and has suffered poor results in recent months.

Roma were eliminated by Lazio in the quarterfinals of Italian Cup last week and, last Sunday, was defeated by Milan in the Italian Championship. In the Europa League, Mourinho’s former team came in 2nd place in the group stage, behind Slavia Pragra, and faces Feyenoordwho came from the Champions League, in the pre-round of 16 playoffs of the continental competition.

“We thank José (Mourinho) on behalf of everyone at AS Roma for the passion and commitment he has shown since his arrival at Giallorossi. We will always have great memories of his leadership, but we believe that an immediate change is necessary for the best of the club We wish José and his staff all the best in the future,” said Dan and Ryan Friedkin, owners of Roma.

The Portuguese coach had remarkable spells for Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid e Manchester United and was twice champion of Uefa Champions League. His last club before Roma was Tottenham and Premier League.

Mourinho was even speculated as a possible coach of the Brazilian Team after Tite’s departure and during Fernando Diniz’s period as interim coach, especially when the soap opera involving Carlo Ancelotti pointed to a renewal of the Italian coach at Real Madrid, which, in fact, happened.

Roma returns to the field this Saturday, the 20th, against Hellas Verona for the Italian Championship. The game, like all other Serie A matches, is broadcast on ESPN on Star+.
