Vivianne Miedema scored her first goal since her return on Sunday. The Dutch international helped Arsenal to a league victory over Liverpool: 0-2. In Spain, Esmee Brugts contributed with a goal to a 0-6 victory for FC Barcelona over Real Betis.
The 27-year-old Miedema opened the score for Arsenal visiting Liverpool after an hour of play. The striker found the goal with a shot from the edge of the box.
For Miedema it was her first goal since December 2022. She was then out of action for months due to a serious knee injury. The attacker made her return to Arsenal last October.
Nine minutes after 0-1, Caitlin Foord doubled Arsenal’s lead. Shortly afterwards Miedema was substituted. Victoria Pelova played for ‘The Gunners’ until just before the end and Shanice van de Sanden was substituted for Liverpool twenty minutes before the end.
Thanks to the victory, Arsenal joins number two Manchester City. The Londoners are one place lower than City due to a worse goal difference. Liverpool can be found in fifth place.
Brugts scores in goal celebration Barcelona
In Spain, Brugts signed for Barcelona’s 0-2 against Betis after an early goal from Bruna Vilamala in the 23rd minute. The twenty-year-old attacker was attentive to the rebound of her own shot. It was her first goal since December 9 last year. Then she impressively scored a hat-trick against Eibar.
It was not a hat trick for Brugts against Real Betis, but a few minutes after her goal she was important in the 0-3. The 28-time Dutch international served Caroline Graham with a tailor-made assist.
FC Barcelona turned it into a true gala performance. The leader in the Spanish league did well for the goal difference with goals from Vicky Lopez, Graham and Aitana Bonmatí and easily achieved the 0-6 victory.
It was the 26th victory in a row for FC Barcelona. The last loss of points dates from May 21, 2023, when the Catalans lost 2-1 against Madrid CV
FC Barcelona is comfortably in the lead in the competition. The lead over number two Real Madrid is nine points after fourteen rounds. The team of coach Jonatan Giraldez has also qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League in March.
