Large and convincing victory for FC Groningen at Jong AZ

FC Groningen played the away match against Jong AZ on Monday evening. The score was 0-5 at the AFAS sports complex in Wijdewormer. The halftime score in North Holland was 0-2. Jorg Schreuders, Luciano Valente, Romano Postema, Radinio Balker and Thom van Bergen scored for the team of coach Dick Lukkien. The Pride of the North now has 22 points after 16 rounds in the Kitchen Champion Division.

For the fourth league match in a row, FC Groningen kicked off with the same eleven. Once again with the four ‘youngsters’ Thom van Bergen, Romano Postema, Luciano Valente and Jorg Schreuders from our own training in the lead and with our own breeding Wouter Prins in the left back position. In the previous three matches, the Pride of the North remained undefeated in that composition and achieved 5 points.

First half
At the bleak sports complex in Wijdewormer, FC Groningen took the lead within ten minutes with a goal from “homegrown”. Thom van Bergen persevered well and with his second assist in three days he offered his buddy Jorg Schreuders his first goal in professional football, 0-1.

The FC then had plenty of opportunities to double the score. That happened after half an hour of play and not entirely coincidentally from a corner kick. Set pieces are a great weapon for the Pride of the North this season. Wouter Prins placed the ball from a corner at the far post, where Marvin Peersman headed the ball back in front of the goal and Luciano Valente made it 0-2 with a subtle heel.

Second half
Within 3 minutes after the break, Johan Hove sent Valente into the depth with a free pass to the Alkmaar goal, but the attacking midfielder shot over. After an hour of play, FC Groningen still took the desired distance after a beautiful attack. Captain Marco Rente advanced over the right flank, pulled the ball back to the incoming Schreuders, who with a nice move set Postema free in front of the goal. The striker from Stad finished coolly, 0-3.

The quintet from their own training played a very important role in the large lead against their peers from AZ.

Less than five minutes later, the Groningers put an end to any remaining uncertainty. Another corner resulted in another goal. It was once again Radinio Balker who scored, also his second goal within three days, 0-4.

Afterwards, coach Lukkien could make substitutions with confidence and other boys were given playing time, including the sixth talent from his own training; Thijmen Blokzijl. Five minutes before the end, Van Bergen also contributed, giving the four youngsters in front all a goal to their name in Wijdewormer. In the final minute, Hidde Jurjus thwarted Jong AZ’s only chance and the goalie kept a clean sheet for FC Groningen.
