Girona is having an exceptional season. It only lost to Real Madrid this season and won thirteen of the other fifteen matches. Part of that success is Daley Blind, who also had a starting place in the top match against Barcelona. He faced his former teammate Frenkie de Jong, who kicked off for the home team.

In line with recent months, Girona also surprised in the first half when it visited Barcelona. Coach Michel’s team took the lead within fifteen minutes. One splitting pass and Viktor Tsygankov was able to approach the goalkeeper. He put the ball wide and Artem Dovbyk opened the scoring.

After just under twenty minutes, Barcelona leveled again with a headed goal by Robert Lewandowski, who had not scored in three games in a row. It was an even first half, in which the game was very quiet. Only three violations were committed in total. Girona ultimately went into halftime with a lead.

Miguel Gutiérrez was responsible for that. He moved in and outpaced goalkeeper Iñaki Peña with a treacherous punt into the top corner. Barcelona improved in the second half and created serious opportunities. But Barça ruined the chances themselves and was defeated ten minutes before the end. Valery Fernández turned out to be slightly brighter than Jules Koundé and made it 1-3. Ilkay Gündogan did something back (2-3), but Christhian Stuani finally sent in a cross: 2-4.

Girona won against the big Catalan brother for the first time in club history. As a result, Girona is back at the top of La Liga, with a two-point lead over Real Madrid. Barcelona drops to fourth place and sees the gap with the leader grow to seven points.
