Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch won the top match against Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup with Liverpool on Sunday. ‘The Reds’ were too strong for ‘The Gunners’ with 0-2.
Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior made it 0-1 at the Emirates Stadium ten minutes before the end with an own goal. Luis Díaz put an end to all the tension deep in injury time.
Arsenal were the better team in the first half and quickly created big chances. For example, a shot from Reiss Nelson went just wide and an attempt from Martin Ødegaard ended up on the crossbar. On the other hand, Alexander-Arnold also hit the crossbar just before half-time.
In the second half, Liverpool gained more control over Arsenal’s play. The leader in the Premier League almost took the lead shortly after halftime through a long-range shot by Darwin Núñez, which just went over.
Liverpool take the lead thanks to an own goal
Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale kept Díaz from scoring twelve minutes before the end with a beautiful save and shortly afterwards saw Diogo Jota’s header hit the crossbar. Moments later, Ramsdale was passed by his teammate Kiwior, who headed the ball into his own goal from a free kick from Alexander-Arnold.
Arsenal were unable to force a replay and were awarded another goal in the fifth minute of injury time. Díaz shot the ball hard into the roof of the goal.
Gakpo was the only Dutchman in the Liverpool base. The Dutch international was substituted after an hour of play. Ryan Gravenberch came into the visitors’ line at the same time.
Liverpool had to make do without Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. Van Dijk was ill and Salah is preparing for the African Cup of Nations with Egypt.
