Senegal national team coach Aliou Cisse commented on the decision of his star Sadio Mane to marry a few days before the start of the 2023 African Nations Championship.
Mane, 31, announced his marriage less than a week before the start of the African Championship.
Cisse said in statements to reporters: “Sadio Mane’s marriage a few days before the Nations of Africa? Marriage is an important moment. Football is our life. But there is also a family.”
He added jokingly, “The entire Senegal team, including me, were constantly asking Mane, ‘When are you going to get married?'”
Sadio is with his team, which went to the Senegalese presidential palace on Tuesday morning before traveling to Côte d’Ivoire.
Mane participated with Senegal in 100 international matches, scoring 39 goals and making 22 assists.
The Saudi Al-Nasr striker is the most prominent star in the ranks of the Teranga Lions, which will try to defend the title.
Senegal plays in Group C alongside Cameroon, Guinea and Gambia.
The Teranga Lions begin their campaign to defend the title next January 15 against Gambia, and four days later they face Cameroon.
Senegal will conclude its matches against Guinea on January 23.
Côte d’Ivoire will host the next edition of the tournament, scheduled to be held from January 13 to February 11, 2024.
The tournament will be held in a group system at the beginning, with 6 groups, with 16 teams qualifying for the knockout rounds, the 12 first and second placed, and 4 of the best third placed.
The Senegal national team holds the championship title in the last edition in Cameroon, while the Egyptian national team took second place.
Egypt is still the team that has won the title the most, with 7 times, followed by Cameroon, 5 times, and Ghana, 4 times.
