FC Groningen starts KKD with a win over Jong Ajax

FC Groningen has won the first competition match of 2024 in the Kitchen Champion Division. At Sports Complex de Toekomst the score was 0-1 against Jong Ajax. Thom van Bergen was the match winner for the Pride of the North. FC Groningen now has 35 points after 21 competition matches.

Although head coach Dick Lukkien had sufficient players at his disposal in Amsterdam, a large part of the first selection had taken off their jackets in recent days due to a highly contagious virus. Leandro Bacuna was the last in a long line to lose and the captain could not appear at the roll call at the Toekomst. Partly because of this, Lukkien had made a place in the match selection for Sven Bouland, central defender from FC Groningen under-18, for the first time.

Due to Bacuna’s absence, Marco Rente moved back to the right back position and a place became available in the center back for Thijmen Blokzijl. The young, talented central defender formed a pair with Marvin Peersman, who returned to the starting line-up after a suspension in the cup match with Excelsior.

First half
FC Groningen started well at the Toekomst. The trademark “high pressing football” produced several opportunities in the first fifteen minutes. After 17 minutes of play, Jorg Schreuders’ chase was once again successful and he released Thom van Bergen in the penalty area. The striker finished nicely via the underside of the crossbar, 0-1.

Only after half an hour of play did Hidde Jurjus get the first Amsterdam shot on target. The last part of the first half was neutral.

Second half
After the break, Jong Ajax mainly had the ball, but this did not lead to great opportunities for the Amsterdam team. As a result, the 0-1 remained on the scoreboard for a long time.

First home game 2024
The first home game of 2024 is scheduled for next Friday (January 26). Jong AZ will be the opponent in Euroborg from 8 p.m.
