A massacre for Sporting. This is how we can summarize what happened this Saturday (13/1), at the Chaves Municipal Stadium. In a game for the 17th round of the Portuguese Championship, the Lisbon team went to Trás-os-Montes and won 3-0, with goals from Paulinho, Trincão and Pedro Gonçalves. It was very cheap for the owners of the house. After all, despite Chaves having 48% possession, they only took five shots on goal and they all went wide. The Sportinguistas? 20 shots, 11 on target. And they only didn’t score more goals because of the sensational performance of goalkeeper Hugo Souza, the same one who stood out in the Flamengo.

Sporting thus reaches 43 points and remains in the lead for another round, with Benfica (39) and Porto (35) next (both will still play in the round). Chaves remains at the bottom, with 11 points, four behind the first team outside the relegation zone.

Hugo Souza works miracles, but Sporting wins

The first half, in a very heavy field, was attack against defense. Sporting ruled the field and had chances with Gyokeres, Pedro Gonçalves, Paulinho, Esgaio and Trincão. Goals scored. Hugo Souza defended cinema in all of them. But the goal came in the 43rd minute. After a corner from the right, two Chaves players tried to cut, but the ball ended up with top scorer Paulinho, almost on the line. It was just a matter of touching it into the goal. And wait four endless minutes for the VAR to validate a clear goal.

In the second half, Sporting soon scored two goals, killing the game. In the sixth minute, he added a shot from Trincão after Nuno’s cross from the left. And, at 11, a law from the ex: Pedro Gonçalves with a shot from outside the area, made it 3-0. With a good advantage, Sporting made a stop. Victory was assured.

Speak, wall!

At the end of the match, despite the score being 3-0, everyone wanted to talk to Hugo Souza. The goalkeeper who started out on fire at Flamengo three years ago, but lost space and ended up loaned to Chaves, enchanted with his many difficult saves.

“I played a good game, we fought until the end and showed quality. And we are ready for any challenge because only we can get the team out of this situation.”
