Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Borussia Dortmund

For Borussia Dortmund it was a matter of joining or abandoning the German title battle. The gap with leader Bayer Leverkusen was already ten points and so a victory in the BayArena was crucial for Edin Terzić’s team.

The visitors also took the lead after five minutes. After a long attack, the ball came to left back Julien Ryerson via Marcel Sabitzer and Niclas Füllkrug and the Norwegian scored coolly. Immediately after the opening goal, Bayer Leverkusen went full hunt for the equalizer.

However, the many possessions did not immediately lead to great opportunities for the leaders in the Bundesliga. Granit Furthermore, the home team did not get further than a few shots from distance in the first half.

In the extra time of the first half, Leverkusen seemed to have made it 1-1 after all when Florian Wirtz scored nicely on a pass from Jeremie Frimpong. However, in the run-up to the goal, striker Victor Boniface was narrowly offside and so the goal was canceled.

The game pattern was unchanged in the second half. Leverkusen dominated and slowly it became more and more dangerous. Exequiel Palacios seemed to score, but was stopped by a fantastic tackle from star Mats Hummels and Xhaka shot over after some fumbling by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and Emre Can.

Ten minutes before the end, Leverkusen’s equalizer finally came. Substitute Patrick Schick was well sent away by Odilon Kossounou and the Czech placed the ball perfectly wide for Boniface who could easily tap in his eighth goal of the season.

For Borussia Dortmund it was mainly a matter of holding back in the final phase. Donyell Malen remained on the bench for the entire match, but saw that his team was able to take home the three points in the last second. However, Füllkrug headed millimeters over Lukás Hrádecký’s goal.

Goals were not scored in injury time and so an impressive run came to an end after fourteen victories for Leverkusen. The leader also fails to move further ahead of Bayern Munich, which saw its match canceled. Borussia Dortmund is not yet joining the German title race.
