Madrid (AFP) – Girona gave up the lead to Real Madrid on goal difference after its streak of victories stopped at five consecutive matches, with a 1-1 draw with host Athletic Bilbao on Monday at the end of the fourteenth stage.

The Catalan team entered its match with its Basque guest in second place, one point behind Real Madrid, the only team to beat it this season (3-0 on September 30), after the Royal Club beat Cadiz 3-0 on Sunday.
On Monday, it seemed on its way to its twelfth victory this season and regaining the lead from Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti’s men by two points, after advancing through Ukrainian Viktor Tsihankov in the 55th minute.
But Ghanaian-Spanish player Inaki Williams spared Bilbao their fourth defeat of the season and returned them to fifth place on goal difference against Real Sociedad, who won on Sunday over Sevilla 2-1, by equalizing in the 67th minute following a counterattack.
Despite their third draw this season, Girona hopes that history will favor them because four of the last five teams that entered the thirteenth stage with 34 points or more won the title at the end of the season, and the only exception was Barcelona in the 2013-2014 season, according to Opta statistics.
