AZ rose to third place in the Eredivisie on Sunday. The Alkmaarders won 3-0 against FC Volendam, partly thanks to a beautiful goal by Ruben van Bommel and a goal by club top scorer Vangelis Pavlidis.
Van Bommel scored the opening goal after just a few minutes with a nice shot in the intersection. Early in the second half, Pavlidis made it 2-0 from close range. The final score was determined by Bruno Martins Indi.
Thanks to the first victory in more than a month, AZ takes over third place in the Eredivisie from FC Twente. The competitor from Enschede lost 0-3 against leader PSV in their own Grolsch Veste on Saturday evening.
With a gap of ten points, PSV is well out of sight for AZ, which does have number two Feyenoord in its sights. Coach Pascal Jansen’s team has three points less than the Rotterdam team. Volendam only keeps Vitesse under its control.
AZ continues the season on Thursday with a home match against Zrinjski Mostar in the Conference League. If the other group match between Aston Villa and Legia Warsaw ends in a draw, AZ will be eliminated.
Goal Van Bommel highlight of AZ-Volendam
AZ was given a lot of space against FC Volendam on Sunday and Van Bommel took advantage of this early on. The left winger came in with the ball at his foot and shot beautifully into the far intersection.
Both teams had chances in the first half and more should have been scored. At AZ, Ernest Poku was one of the players who did not have his sights set and at Volendam this applied to Robert Mühren, among others.
Even in the second half, AZ was not put in too much of an offensive position and this again led to a quick goal. Pavlidis finished from close range and was accurate in all seven home matches of this Eredivisie season. Only Kees Kist, John Eriksen, Ali Elkhattabi and Alfred Finnbogason achieved that.
With Pavlidis’ goal, who hit the post twice more, the match was decided. It became 3-0 thanks to Martins Indi, who scored his first goal since March 2022.
