Aryna Sabalenka won a dream Australian Open

Sabalenka extended her reign in Australia!

The world number two successfully defended her title at the Australian Open, with a resounding victory in the final over Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 6-2.

Aryna Sabalenka (No. 2 in the WTA ranking) achieved what seemed impossible. After more than a decade, the Australian Open retained champion: the Belarusian defeated the Chinese Zheng Qinwen (15th) 6-3 and 6-2 after one hour and sixteen minutes inside the Rod Laver Arena. Thus, she became the ninth tennis player to successfully defend the crown in Melbourne in the Open Era.

In her first defense of her Grand Slam title, Sabalenka swept away doubts by crossing the draw with victories in straight sets to once again reach a top-level definition and third in a row on hard courts. During these two weeks she showed her category with solid performances over Ella Seidel (6-0, 6-1), Brenda Fruhvirtova (6-3, 6-2), Lesia Tsurenko (6-0, 6-0), Amanda Anisimova ( 6-3, 6-2), Barbora Krejcikova (6-2, 6-3) and Coco Gauff (7-6, 6-4).

While Zheng Qinwen overcame the challenges proposed by Ashlyn Krueger (3-6, 6-2, 6-3), Katie Boulter (6-3, 6-3), Wang Yafan (6-4, 2-6, 7- 6), Oceane Dodin (6-0, 6-3), Anna Kalinskaya (6-7, 6-3, 6-1) and Dayana Yastremska (6-4, 6-4).

The consecration against the 21-year-old Chinese 6-3 and 6-2 made her the fifth tennis player to win the Australian Open without giving up sets, joining Lindsay Davenport (2000), Maria Sharapova (2008), Serena Williams (2017) and Ashleigh Barty (2022).

She is also the first to defend the crown since her compatriot Victoria Azarenka did so in 2013, with whom she also shares another achievement by being the second this century since Vika to reach three consecutive Grand Slam finals on hard courts.

Starting next Monday, it will remain in second place in the ranking thanks to the defense of the oceanic tournament. Zheng Qinwen will debut in the Top 10 as the new seven in the world.
