Ajax traveled to England on Wednesday without Jay Gorter, Devyne Rensch and Georges Mikautadze for the Europa League match against Brighton & Hove Albion. The trio is not fit enough to play.
Gorter was injured in the lost away match against FC Utrecht (4-3) on Sunday and has not yet recovered. Reserve keeper Diant Ramaj replaced him. Rensch already missed the match in Utrecht due to an injury. Mikautadze is sick.
Gerónimo Rulli and Sivert Mannsverk, who have been injured for some time, are also not present in Brighton. Midfielder Silvano Vos missed the previous match against AEK (1-1) due to suspension and can play again.
The match in Brighton follows shortly after the departure of coach Maurice Steijn, who decided to quit in consultation with Ajax on Monday. Assistant coach Hedwiges Maduro will take over his duties for the time being.
It is expected that Ajax will appoint John van ‘t Schip as trainer in the short term. The former player of the Amsterdam team, who would already have a technical role, is in discussions with the club.
Brighton-Ajax starts on Thursday at 9 p.m. The crisis club from Amsterdam awaits another tough away match on Sunday: they will then travel to leader PSV in a competitive context.
