A snow zone will move across the south and especially the southeast of the country today. Most snow falls in South Limburg. There will be a few wintry showers in the north and northwest. Follow the developments in this snow blog.

20:10 Very different weather next week

Winter weather will remain this week, but things will change from Sunday. In the video below and this article we will tell you what you can expect.

19:28 No record amounts of snow

We do not see amounts of snow like today in South Limburg every winter, but there are certainly no records. You can read what record quantities are in our article “This is the most snow that has ever fallen in the Netherlands

19:01 Current status and expectations

In the south of Limburg, 10-15 cm of snow has already fallen on a large scale this afternoon and locally even 15-20 cm fell in the hills. In the south of Central Limburg 5-10 cm fell and even further north in Central Limburg and in the extreme southeast of North Brabant 1-5 cm fell. North of the Eindhoven-Venray line and in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, only a few flakes of snow fell.

The snow zone is now slowly starting to move southeastward. As a result, it will gradually become completely dry in the southeast of North Brabant and later in the evening also in Central Limburg. South Limburg will continue to have intensive snowfall all evening. Dry periods follow at night, but occasionally it can snow for a while. It only dries completely in the early morning.

The snow cover in South Limburg will eventually increase even further to 15-20 cm on a large scale and in the hills this can increase to 20-25 cm.

Slippery conditions due to freezing and local winter showers

In the rest of the country it can become slippery due to freezing of wet road sections and old snow remnants in residential areas and on local roads. Moreover, local winter showers are possible in the coastal provinces. These showers bring a little bit of wet snow or snow. It cools down to -1 degree at the sea to -5 locally inland.

Tomorrow during the day it will be dry except for a local winter shower. Once again, it is mainly the coastal provinces that have a chance of this. In the afternoon it is temporarily a few degrees above zero and then there is no chance of slippery conditions. The southern half of Limburg is an exception. Above a lot of snow, the temperature remains stuck around freezing point. And it is slippery due to snow (residues) on the roads.

During the night to Friday and Friday morning, a number of snow showers will move across our country, causing the regional weather to become white and slippery. It will be dry again on Friday afternoon.

6:40 PM Major nuisance in Germany

There is also considerable inconvenience in our neighboring countries due to snowfall and icy conditions. Winter weather has caused problems on rail, road and aviation in large parts of Germany throughout the day. The problems were greatest in the south and center of the country, but one death occurred in the Eifel. Heavy snow is expected in the west and center.

In Germany, dangerous conditions arose due to snow, sleet and ice on the roads. The German weather service DWD issued a warning for the southern half and the southwest of the country. People are better off not taking to the road. The icy conditions will continue into the night on Wednesday. The weather will not improve until Thursday, DWD says. (Source: ANP)

17:53 Beautiful images from the Vijlenerbossen

In the Vijlenerbossen (the extreme south of Limburg) there is currently 15-20 cm of snow in some places and 10-15 cm on a large scale. The snow is not very sticky, which makes making snowmen a bit difficult.

17:40 Avoid highways in Limburg

Rijkswaterstaat is calling on people not to use the highway in Limburg until late Wednesday evening. This is because of the snowfall in the region. There are significant delays on the highways in Limburg due to traffic jams. Gritters cannot pass through it, making it very difficult to combat slippery conditions. Driving conditions are therefore becoming increasingly worse, the organization said. More and more people are getting stuck and so the “urgent call” follows not to go on the highway until late in the evening.

On the A2, delays in both directions have increased to 180 minutes, a spokeswoman said. Driving is also done at a walking pace on other highways in the region. Rijkswaterstaat is working on the Limburg highways “with all its might” and with “heavy machines” to address the situation. But there are fears that snow will freeze due to the low temperatures on the ground, causing ice to form. (Source: ANP)

17:13 Also quite a bit of snow in Central Limburg

There is also a lot of snow in the southern part of Central Limburg. There is now an estimated roughly 3-8 cm of snow there and 5-15 cm in South Limburg

5:00 PM Only 30 km per hour on the highway

On the highways you can only drive at a snail’s pace of 30 km per hour.

16:45 About 10 cm in Simpelveld

Our colleague Berend van Straaten already estimates the snow cover in Simpelveld in South Limburg at 10 cm and it will continue to snow there all evening. On the Vaalserberg there is even 15-20 cm in some places!

15:50 Freezing rain in Germany

In Germany, an increasingly thick layer of ice is forming on roads and objects in the region east of Luxembourg up to Frankfurt. The icy conditions will continue there for some time. There is also a chance of temporary icy conditions further north. There is also a lot of snow in Germany and Belgium.

15:20 Eindhoven on the edge of the snow zone

Eindhoven has been on the edge of the snow zone for hours, but for now the snow largely remains just south of the city. The northern border is now approximately Reusel – Eindhoven – Overloon. The snow may move a little further north in the coming hours and tonight the snow zone will start to move to the southeast.

11:30 Problems on the road in Wallonia

Roads in the Belgian province of Luxembourg are very slippery due to widespread icy conditions as rain freezes in many places. Transport company TEC has announced that their network in Luxembourg is completely shut down due to the winter weather and that there are no buses running. Code red applies in this province. Code orange applies to other provinces in Wallonia.

Trucks longer than 13 meters are not allowed on the road in some places after 1 p.m. The restriction applies to parts of the E42 and E25 highways. “The aim of this measure is to guarantee maximum safety for motorists and truck drivers, to facilitate gritting activities and also to keep traffic moving on regional roads,” reports the Walloon traffic authority CAR.

11:10 Extensive frost

It is freezing in the vast majority of the Netherlands. Only on the Wadden Islands and in the western coastal areas is the mercury often just above zero.

10:30 Snow showers move over the Wadden Islands

We are mainly looking at Limburg, but snow is also falling in the far north of the Netherlands at the moment.

10:00 code orange and red in neighboring countries

In Belgium, a significant amount of snow falls in many more places. It can also be icy for a while in the southeast of this country. This also applies to Luxembourg and parts of northern France and Germany. In these areas, at least code orange applies. Code red even applies in Luxembourg, the Belgian province of Luxembourg and large parts of Germany.

Frankfurt Airport, among others, warns of serious disruptions to air traffic today and tomorrow due to heavy snow and icy conditions. (Source: ANP)

Smoothness in southwestern Germany:

9:20 Radar may give precipitation too early

Below is the radar image from 9:20 am. The radar scans the sky at some height and the snowflakes still need some time to reach the ground. Also, some of the precipitation at the front boundary (northern side) of the precipitation area evaporates before reaching the ground. So it may be the case in the coming hours that the precipitation radar indicates that something is already falling in your area, but it will then take another 15-20 minutes before it actually happens.
